Following his buyout with the Detroit Pistons, Nerlens Noel is the top free agent center on the market.

The Detroit Pistons have completed a buyout with center Nerlens Noel.

Noel appeared in only 14 games for the Pistons this season. He averaged 2.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 0.6 blocks in 10.9 minutes per game.

The 28-year-old was an awkward fit for the rebuilding Pistons. With a 15-47 record, they are far out of the playoff race. Furthermore, they have a wealth of younger options at center including James Wiseman, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, and Marvin Bagley III.

Noel has the potential to help a contending team. He is an excellent interior defender. Last season, opponent’s field goal percentages dropped by 9.6 points on shots within 10 feet, when Noel was the primary defender. In addition, Noel has averaged 2.8+ blocks per 100 possessions in five consecutive seasons.

In his short time on the court this season, his impact was felt. His +3.0 defensive plus/minus led the Pistons (minimum two games played).

Here are three potential fits for Noel.

Playoff teams that need to sign Nerlens Noel: 3. Dallas Mavericks

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The Dallas Mavericks just need depth.

Following the Kyrie Irving deal, the Mavericks are left with few reliable options off the bench.

Noel’s fit with the team is somewhat of a question mark. Christian Wood is the backup center, right now, but he has a very different skill set than Noel. Wood is an offensive-minded big man, who can space the floor. On paper, Wood and Noel could play together.

Noel’s defensive ability would be a welcome addition in Dallas. The Mavericks are 23rd in the NBA in defensive rating (115.1).
