Who won March Madness 2022?
By John Buhler
It is not the least bit shocking a college basketball blue blood won March Madness last year.
With March Madness upon us, do you remember who won the NCAA Tournament a year ago?
It was the first NCAA Tournament played in front of fans since 2019. Remember, the 2020 tournament got canceled due to COVID and the 2021 tournament was played in Indiana to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.
But last year, college basketball felt big again. We were so fortunate that the men’s Final Four featured four blue bloods in Duke, Kansas, UNC and Villanova.
You better believe that Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks were the ones to raise another banner.
College basketball: What team won March Madness in 2022?
Although Kansas had largely been mired with controversy throughout the season, Self’s mules ran the gauntlet, alright. KU went 34-6 overall and 14-4 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks were Big 12 co-champions with then-reigning national champion Baylor. Kansas went on to win the Big 12 conference tournament. The Jayhawks earned the No. 1 seed in the Midwest and the No. 3 overall seed.
After dismantling Texas Southern in the first round, KU got out of Fort Worth with a seven-point victory over Creighton to advance to the Sweet 16. Meeting them in Chicago was No. 13-seeded Providence, who the Jayhawks eked out a narrow five-point victory over. After handling No. 10-seeded Miami a loss two days later, it would be onto New Orleans for the Final Four-bound Jayhawks.
While most of the college basketball world was captivated by the UNC-Duke matchup on the other side of the bracket, Self’s squad handled business in what was Jay Wright’s final game leading Villanova. Although North Carolina looked like a team capable of winning it all, a second-half collapse resulted in KU winning its first national title since 2008, the second under Self’s guidance.
Mark Emmert may have botched the delivery, but Kansas was every bit the champion a year ago.
