Every college basketball fan has a dream of filling out the perfect March Madness bracket but has it ever happened? What are the odds of doing it?

Whenever college hoops enthusiasts sit down in front of their March Madness bracket to fill it out, the dream is the same across the country: creating the perfect March Madness bracket. It’s the elusive goal of every fan whenever the NCAA Tournament starts, especially with lofty prizes often offered by national bracket pools if you’re able to pull it off.

Of course, to get a perfect bracket, that means picking 63 games without missing one, which seems impossible. So much so that some fans might be wondering if it’s actually ever happened before.

Well, the answer to that shouldn’t be all that shocking.

Has there ever been a perfect March Madness bracket?

Among the many services that run bracket challenges or can officially confirm if a bracket is perfect or not, there has never been a perfect March Madness bracket in the history of the NCAA Tournament.

The closest that we’ve seen was back in the 2019 tourney when one man picked the first 49 games of the tournament correctly. Purdue beating Tennessee in overtime in the Sweet 16 was the 50th game of the NCAA Tournament and ended the run. That in itself is quite impressive, especially when you look at the odds of a perfect bracket being picked.

Odds of picking a perfect March Madness bracket

The odds of picking a perfect March Madness bracket are set a 1-in-9 quintillion. And really, you need to see that written out to truly appreciate it. 1-in-9,000,000,000,000,000,000. Goodness.

An interview with a mathematics professor conducted by CNN said that you have a better chance of winning the Powerball twice with consecutive tickets, of a family of four all getting struck by lightning, or even a family of four to all get injured by a toilet (seriously), than of picking a perfect bracket.

So yeah, the odds are pretty astronomical. But that won’t stop us during March Madness. So fill out your bracket and hope your odds are in favor of a perfect bracket rather than you and the rest of your family suffering some sort of toilet-related ailment.
