March Madness is officially underway and Furman’s upset victory over Virginia has set the tone for this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Well, if you had the Furman Paladins in your bracket, you’re feeling pretty good right now.

After knocking off the Virginia Cavaliers during the first-round of the NCAA Tournament, March Madness has gotten off to an electric start.

Speaking of electric, the call by the Furman radio play-by-play broadcaster was absolutely outstanding. Having not been in the NCAA Tournament since 1980, you’ll forgive Dan Scott for being a little excited during the final 2.2 seconds of Thursday’s first-round game in Orlando.

The Furman Paladins entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed in the South Region and were matched up against the Virginia Cavaliers in Round 1. UVA was coming off a solid season in the ACC.

But head coach Bob Richey’s group from Greenville, South Carolina was not going to be denied. The Paladins let a late lead slip away and the Cavaliers held a two-point advantage in the closing second with the ball after Furman made two free throws with 12 seconds left.

But after being trapped in the corner, Virginia point guard Kihei Clark threw the ball wildly toward mid-court and there was no one from his team in the vicinity.

Instead, the ball was up for grabs and was intercepted by Garrett Hien. The ball wound up in the hands of JP Pegues who knocked down a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining. The triple would turn out to be the game-winner for Furman, as the Paladins took home their first NCAA Tournament win since 1974.

The Paladins will be moving on to the Round of 32 and will face the winner of No. 5 seed San Diego State versus No. 12 seed Charleston with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. Virginia is out of the tournament five years to the day since the Cavaliers became the first-ever No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed.
