Virginia suffered a massive upset against Furman in the NCAA Tournament, and Patrick Mahomes was bewildered.

Patrick Mahomes is fully aware of the Virginia basketball program. His Texas Tech Red Raiders lost a national title against them a couple of years ago in March Madness.

However, the Cavaliers looked to have returned their old folding ways in the big show, the latest being their upset loss to the 13-seed Furman Paladins 68-67 this year.

Needless to say, Mahomes had a lot to say — particularly about the turnover that set up Furman’s game-winner.

Yup, that’s exactly the reaction. Also, it’s five years to the day the Cavaliers were upset by 16-seed UMBC in another unforgettable March Madness moment. The Paladins and Golden Retrievers can now have a playdate celebrating a Cavalier defeat on the same day, just five years apart.

A quick steal and 3-point dagger by JP Pegues enables the Paladins to join an elusive group of Cinderella teams that knock off a high seed to reach the next round. But the Paladins cannot celebrate for long; they have a date with either Charleston or San Diego State.

Still, the men in Purple can dance knowing that they won and they got the attention of a reigning Super Bowl MVP. Unfortunately for Mahomes, the Red Raiders did not qualify for the big dance this season and have endured some off-the-court issues as well. However, it’s not about them; it’s really now about the Virginia program.

Tony Bennett’s teams have fallen repeatedly as favorites, and only once did they capture the crown, and divine intervention may have played a role in that. Whatever the case is, the Cavaliers are headed home, and the Paladins have another game to play. You can be assured that Patrick Mahomes will be watching.
