No. 1 seed Alabama’s Twitter account briefly denied losing to the San Diego State Aztecs in the Sweet 16 of March Madness.

The Alabama Crimson Tide’s March Madness run is over, as they fell to the San Diego State Aztecs on Friday night 64-71. The Crimson Tide shot an abysmal 3-27 from three.

Projected lottery pick Brandon Miller recorded nine points and six turnovers, while shooting 3-of-19 from the field and 1-of-10 from three.

On the other side, senior guard Darrion Trammell led the Aztecs with a game-high 21 points, five rebounds, and two steals.

San Diego State’s defense ranks in the Top 25 in the nation in both points allowed (63.1) and defensive rating (94.1). That strength has been a big factor in their NCAA Tournament success. They have held all their tournament opponents to a field goal percentage of less than 33 percent.

Alabama Twitter account claims victory?

In an unprecedented move, Alabama’s official Twitter account tweeted that they won.

It was a bold move.

Unsurprisingly, this led to a variety of reactions on Twitter.

Despite the hyperbole, the account obviously made a simple error on the original score graphic by accidentally switching the two numbers.

It was a disappointing loss for the Crimson Tide, who had a favorable path to the Final Four. The No. 2 seed (Arizona) and No. 3 seed (Baylor) were both eliminated. So, if they won, they would have faced the winner of No. 6 Creighton vs. No. 15 Princeton.

Meanwhile, the Aztecs made the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. In addition, they became the first Mountain West team to ever make the Elite Eight.
