The 2023 men’s NCAA Tournament has not been short on upset wins. After all, there wasn’t a No. 1 seed left in the Elite Eight for the first time ever. Entering Sunday evening, there were three teams who clinched a spot in the Final Four — No. 9 Florida Atlantic, No. 4 UConn, and No. 5 San Diego State. All that was left was the winner of the No. 5 Miami and No. 2 Texas game.

After trailing 45-37 at halftime, the Hurricanes scored 51 points in the second half, including breaking a 79-79 tie late in the second half to pick up the 88-81 victory over the Longhorns. Ironically, head coach Jim Larrañaga led Miami to the Final Four on the 17-year anniversary of when he coached the George Mason Patriots to the Final Four in 2006.

Miami is just two wins away from winning the 2023 NCAA men’s Tournament. Have they ever accomplished this feat before?

No, Miami has never won the NCAA men’s Tournament.

This is actually the first time that the Hurricanes men’s basketball team has made it to the Final Four. They had made it to the Elite Eight twice total, and they happened this year and in 2022. So, Miami’s men’s basketball team hasn’t had much success in the NCAA Tournament in their history.

The Hurricanes opened up this year’s tourney by defeating the No. 12 Drake Bulldogs 63-56, and followed that up with a 85-69 victory over the No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers. They reached the Sweet 16 for the fifth-time ever, but had to face off against the No. 1 Houston Cougars, who were one of the favorites to win the whole tourney. But, the Hurricanes decisively beat the Cougars 89-75 to reach the Elite Eight.

Now with their win over Texas, Miami has the chance to reach the national championship game for the first time ever. But, they will have to get past a UConn team that outscored their opponents by 90 points total this entire tournament.
