One of the Mets’ most talked-about prospects, Brett Baty, suffered an unfortunate injury in Tuesday’s game against Rochester.

NY Mets top prospect Brett Baty suffered a hand injury in Tuesday’s game against the Rochester Red Wings, and based on the video, the injury looks a tad concerning.

Baty hurt his right hand while swinging at a pitch in the bottom of the third inning. He tried to shake it off, but trainers came onto the field to take a look; Baty ended up finishing the at-bat by drawing a walk and running the bases, and Jose Peraza replaced him in the next inning.

The biggest concern is that Baty hurt the same hand that was operated on last year, when he needed to surgically repair his thumb.

It’s a pitiful incident for the 23-year-old third baseman who had not too long ago challenged for a roster spot on the Mets. Baty has hit .400 with two homers and five RBI to start the Triple-A season with Syracuse, performing much better than the player ended up getting the start in NY: Eduardo Escobar.

Escobar, who struggled during the World Baseball Classic when he played for Team Venezuela, has put together a measly stat line, recording just one hit in 16 at-bats and slashing a measly .063/.118/.063/.181.

At the start of the regular season, the Mets have seen impressive performances from Kodai Senga and others, yet they’re coming off a morale-sinking 10-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in which the offense wholeheartedly failed to produce.

There’s no question that Baty has been outperforming Escobar these last few days, and losing a top prospect like him would crush the club.

New York will pray that Baty’s injury isn’t that serious as they await an official diagnosis.
