2023 NFL Draft Day 2 mock draft: Projecting Picks No. 48-55 (Round 2)

Pick Analysis. CB. Michigan. 48. 50. Scouting Report. DJ Turner. player

Some people thought that, after trading Jeff Okudah, the Lions were an obvious cornerback landing spot in Round 1. Apparently not — but they still need help. DJ Turner is a freak athlete who improved as a coverage player throughout his time at Michigan. He’s a worthwhile play here in the mid-second round.

55. South Carolina. Cam Smith. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. CB. 49

Instead of taking Joey Porter Jr. at No. 32, the Steelers take a versatile defensive back there in Brian Branch and now find a cornerback who I believe is better than Porter, Cam Smith. Smith checks every box as a corner in what you want and what Pittsburgh has often valued. He should be a readymade starter for the Steelers.

Pick Analysis. QB. 48. Scouting Report. Tennessee. Hendon Hooker. 50. player

And now another quarterback domino drops with Hendon Hooker coming to Tampa Bay to essentially be the Tom Brady replacement. Look, the Bucs roster is about to undergo a huge rebuild over the next few years. But if they don’t have a viable option of quarterback, that doesn’t matter. With a clean bill of health, Hooker could come in and compete to be that guy as a rookie.

player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Oregon State. 51. 59. TE. Luke Musgrave

After losing their first-round pick due to tampering, the Dolphins finally come on the clock and find a perfect replacement for Mike Gesicki. If not for his injury history, Luke Musgrave would’ve been an easy Top 40 pick. The talent, athleticism and potential for the Oregon State product as a pass-catching weapon are clear when he was on the field, though.

Northwestern. player. 36. Pick Analysis. DL. 52. Scouting Report. Adetomiwa Adebawore

Whenever I saw an undersized defensive lineman run sub-4.5 in the 40 at the Combine, my Seahawks radar went off. Adetomiwa Adebawore is less of a project, though, as an explosive and versatile piece for the front seven. Seattle has some real weaknesses there, so landing a player with the upside of Adebawore is a big win for them.

57. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. EDGE. USC. Tuli Tuipulotu. 53. player

The Bears used their first-round pick after trading down (twice) to protect Justin Fields. Now they can do that less directly by improving the defense with Tuli Tuipulotu. Trevis Gipson and Rasheem Green are currently the starting edge rushers and Tuipulotu is a playmaker with some versatility and a ton of grit who can make things happen for them right away.

CB. Utah. Clark Phillips III. 54. 13. Scouting Report. player. Pick Analysis

Particularly with the J.C. Jackson injury raising some alarms in LA right now, the Chargers need to get some secondary help. Clark Phillips III was once projected as a first-round pick for some and, while his testing has caused the stock to dip a bit, the tape shows a solid cover corner who should be able to come in and contribute to the Bolts’ defense right away.

Jonathan Mingo. 55. player. 50. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. WR. Ole Miss

We’ve already seen in this draft that the Lions are willing to make aggressive reaches for their guys. They need receiver help, especially with news of the Jameson Williams suspension, and Jonathan Mingo has been a big riser in the draft process. He checks all the boxes physically and has shown toughness and great ability, particularly in the pre-draft process and at events like the Senior Bowl where he was a standout.
