Matt Rhule wants to rebuild the Nebraska football program with key high school stars in-state such as Omaha North defensive lineman Tyson Terry.

With three-star defensive lineman Tyson Terry committing to Matt Rhule’s Nebraska football program, it only further illustrates the type of recruiting strategy that will be implemented by the new Cornhuskers head coach to hopefully turn this thing around in short order.

Terry is a three-star defensive line prospect out of Omaha North, who could conceivably play both ways, or just on the offensive side of the ball instead.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound lineman opted to stay home and go to Lincoln to play for Rhule over more established programs in the same geographical sphere such as Iowa, Iowa State and Kansas State. This is a massive pickup for UNL.

As is tradition, nothing is official in the world of college football recruiting until you see the sweet graphic shared out by On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Twitter.

Without question, Rhule is making the right call by prioritizing three-star recruits in-state.

Matt Rhule wants to bring Nebraska football back with more homegrown talent

This right here is exactly why it will probably work for Rhule in Lincoln. Ideally, you would want the best players in-state to play for the big school of note. However, a traditional power like Nebraska historically recruited heavily in Texas to field its championship-caliber rosters from yesteryear. There is some talent in-state, just not to the degree of say a Michigan, an Ohio or a Pennsylvania.

But what makes Rhule so special? Why could it work for him and not say … Scott Frost? Well, Rhule has a reputation for turning around downtrodden programs in a hurry by his great talent evaluation coming out of the high school level. Simply, he and his coaching staffs find and develop two and three-stars coming out of high school to turn around programs like Baylor and Temple.

Given that Nebraska has a much deeper football tradition than Baylor and Temple combined, it probably means he could achieve even greater success in Lincoln than he did in Waco or Philadelphia previously. This is because he will have the necessary NIL backing to field potentially a contending team at UNL. In time, the Huskers could return to a 9-3, 10-2 program under Rhule.

As long as important high school recruits like Terry stay in-state, Nebraska will be on the come up.
