Future Open Championship locations for 2024, 2025 and beyond
Breaking down future Open Championship locations to see where the British Open will be played in 2024, 2025, 2026 and as far out as we know.
When you look at The Open Championship locations in modern history, there truly isn’t a bad course in rota that the R&A has to work from. They’ve done a phenomenal job finding the right courses to test the best golfers in the world, which is no exception as we head back to Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time since 2014 this year The Open in 2023.
Many of the governing bodies for major championships, however, have a tendency to announce future venues well in advanced. For instance, there are already locations for the US Open announced into the 2050s, which is a wild thought to consider. And of course, we know The Masters will be at Augusta National Golf Club. But what about future Open Championship locations?
The R&A has their rota, so we have a loose idea of where The Open Championship could be headed next, but we never know for sure until its announced. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the future location of The Open that we do know.
Future Open Championship locations for 2024, 2025 and 2026
The future Open Championship locations have only been announced until the 2026 tournament. Here’s a look at the venues with notes on their location, the last time it was played there, and who won that major.
- 2024: Royal Troon Golf Club – Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland (July 18-21)
- 2025: Royal Portrush Golf Club – Portrush, Antrim, Northern Ireland (July 17-20)
- 2026: Royal Birkdale Golf Club – Southport, Merseyside, England (July 16-19)
Next year, the 2024 Open Championship will be at Royal Troon, which last hosted back in 2016. That tournament was won by Henrik Stenson, who overtook Phil Mickelson for the lead on Saturday and then pulled away with a masterful Sunday 63 to take the Claret Jug.
Moving forward, it will be back to Royal Portrush for The Open in 2025, which is a quick return after playing there in 2019. That was supposed to be a triumphant return home to Northern Ireland for Rory McIlroy but, after he faltered greatly, it was a crowning moment for Irishman Shane Lowry.
Finally, the last announced venue is for the 2026 Open Championship, Royal Birkdale, where the R&A last selected to play this event back in 2017 when Jordan Spieth completed a pristine wire-to-wire victory for his third career major victory.
