Rodney Harrison made his weekly appearance on WEEI in Boston on Tuesday to discuss what went wrong for the New England Patriots in their 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and saw Tom Brady benched after a pick-six in the fourth quarter.

The former Patriots safety who won a Super Bowl with Brady believes his former teammate doesn’t have the type of help around him at the skill positions necessary to make plays and win games.

With a wide receiver corp that consists of Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell complementing classic overachiever Julian Edelman, Harrison isn’t surprised to see Brady having the worst start of his Hall of Fame career.

“Tom Brady can still play,” Harrison said on WEEI. “But when you surround him — there’s a reason why Brandon LaFell was let go [by the Panthers]. He’s not a great player. He’s a young guy, and he has to make his way in this league. And Danny Amendola, you look at him, no one ever said he was a great player. He’s always been hurt. The history is behind it. Rob Gronkowski, obviously coming off that ACL injury, he’s been hurt. So it’s not like when you look at the Patriots on paper they just have all these weapons and teams are afraid of them.”

Harrison is spot on in his assessment of LaFell who never developed with the Carolina Panthers and they had no issues letting him walk in free agency after years of waiting for him to breakout. Amendola has essentially been replaced by Edelman who replaced Wes Welker as the slot receiver in this offense and the only thing consistent about him is that he’s always hurt.

Gronkowski is as talented of a tight end as the NFL has maybe ever seen, but it’s understandable for him to get off to a slow start following ACL surgery in the offseason and a preseason that saw him limited and didn’t play in a preseason game. Will Gronkowsi shake off the rust and revert back to his All-Pro form? Most likely, but in the meantime Brady’s bunch is not as dynamic and explosive as it was a couple seasons ago when the Patriots were in the Super Bow.
