You probably weren’t expecting your sports news to mix with Ebola related issues, but it seems as if the destructive disease is even entering the athletic world.

We’ve already heard about Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban instructing his players to avoid flying to Africa during the crisis and now a high school soccer coach has quit after his players mocked a player from West Africa with Ebola chants.

"Edward Bachert, custodian for the 16-year-old West African soccer player, said the teen told him he was peppered with Ebola comments at last Thursday’s game at Nazareth. Other Nazareth players told Bachert their opponents directed racial remarks at the teen as well, said Bachert, who was at the game but out of earshot."

Both the head and assistant coaches of the Northampton boys soccer club resigned over the incident. Northampton Area School District Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik said any players who made comments to the West African player would face punishment.

“The administration has conducted a thorough investigation throughout the entire day and appropriate discipline will be dispensed to any students who violated the code of conduct,” Kovalchik said.

While some will chalk this up to ‘kids being kids’ you have to wonder why this was allowed in the first place. Considering the report states it was a ‘chant’ you’d like to assume those in charge of the students would have quickly put a stop to the vile discrimination.

The young boy who was the target of the Ebola jokes was said to become upset during the game and charged at one of the Northampton players, resulting in an ejection from the game.

Hopefully the young man can get past the despicable act and those who participated in the chant have learned their lesson.
