Boston University goalie Matt O’Connor commits an unfortunate mistake at a really bad time.

Accidental goals and goalie gaffes happen all the time in hockey, particularly in the college ranks. But a major mistake in a national championship game will be remembered for a long time.

Unfortunately for poor Boston University goalie Matt O’Connor, this video isn’t going away any time soon.

As seen above, Providence gets a goal from center ice after O’Connor loses the puck in his pads. The gaffe tied the game at 3, and Providence would go on to win 4-3 in regulation.

Now there’s no telling what direction the game would have gone in if O’Connor catches the puck cleanly, but that stands out as a play that changed the contest entirely. Providence benefited with its first national title in program history. It should be noted that O’Connor played very well in Boston’s semifinal win over North Dakota.

Let’s just hope O’Connor can move on and have a successful career, in hockey or otherwise. As O’Connor is a junior, he could return to college next season, but is is drawing a lot of attention from NHL clubs.

No goalie is immune to such mistakes, even some of the best of all time. As bad as O’Connor’s gaffe was, it doesn’t top Patrick Roy from Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals.
