Fantasy Baseball: Who Can Help With Jonathan Lucroy Headed To The DL?

facebooktwitterreddit

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse for the 2-11 Brewers, catcher Jonathan Lucroy is heading to the DL with a broken big toe on his left foot. With Travis d’Arnaud going down yesterday and Yan Gomes and Matt Wieters still out, catcher has become a very thin position in the fantasy landscape.

So who can help you while Lucroy is out? Lucroy was struggling out of the gate, hitting only .156 with two RBI and three runs scored. It won’t be hard to replace his current production, but what about what you thought you were going to get with him? That could be a bigger challenge over the next month. Here are some ideas. Just keep in mind that the free agent pool at catcher is already rather shallow.

The standard league adds are available in 40-75% of ESPN leagues. The moderate league adds will be players owned in 10-39% of ESPN leagues. The deep league adds will be owned in less than 10% of leagues

  • Standard leagues:

Wilson Ramos, Nationals: Remember him? When Ramos has been healthy over the last two years, he has been a big fantasy asset. That’s the issue though. He has had problems staying on the field. This year he says he feels better than he has in years, and he looks like it at the plate too. He is hitting .268 with a homer, eight RBI, and three runs scored. He should continue to see plenty of RBI opportunities in the Nationals lineup, and will show spotty power as well.

Derek Norris, Padres: Norris was outstanding with Oakland last year in mostly limited at bats. He doesn’t have a ton of power, but he will hit. He is hitting .314 with five RBI and eight runs scored. With him entrenched in a high-powered lineup, his runs and RBI totals will continue to impress.

    Moderate leagues:

Caleb Joseph, Orioles: Matt Wieters is supposed to come off the DL sometime in June, which means that Joseph will be valuable until then. Which is how long you need him if you are replacing Lucroy. Convenient, huh? Joseph isn’t just a convenience add. He is hitting .375 with a homer, four RBI, and six runs scored.

Alex Avila, Tigers: Yes, he is in a platoon situation with James McCann. He is also not lighting it up with a .182 average. But he has scored seven runs, driven in three, and hit a homer. There is a chance that he could get hot at any time, but you hate to carry a guy in a platoon at catcher. Unless you have the roster slots available for both him an Wilin Rosario. That could be an intriguing replacement.

    Deep leagues:

Roberto Perez, Indians: Perez has filled in nicely for Yan Gomes. He has hit .261 with two homers, four RBI, and four runs scored in just 23 at bats. That makes him an interesting add until Gomes comes back, which may not be until June anyway.

Tyler Flowers, White Sox: His defensive prowess has kept him in front of Geovany Soto on the depth chart so far, and that will likely continue. Just keep in mind that Flowers usually gets two days a week off. It has worked well for him so far. He is hitting .333 with a homer, four RBI, and three runs scored.

Martin Maldonado, Brewers: Lucroy got some starts at first base last year so the Brewers could get Maldonado’s bat in there against some lefties. He won’t hit for a very high average, but he has good power and will see a lot of at-bats. He could be worth a shot as a Lucroy handcuff.
