Few NFL franchises have been as reliant historically on the NFL draft to build their roster as the Cincinnati Bengals, especially under Marvin Lewis. In fact, according to ESPN Stats & Info, the Bengals lead the league in original draftees on their roster—which does include Michael Johnson, who recently re-signed with Cincinnati after the failed experiment in Tampa Bay after signing with the Buccaneers as a free agent in 2014.

It also includes other lost free agents, which led to the Bengals obtaining two compensatory selections in this draft—one third-round pick, another in the fourth-round. And it comes from a franchise which has mostly picked in the teens and early 20s in the last decade due to their always hunting around the .500 mark (if not better).

So even though the Bengals are well known for being the least committed of any franchise in the league to the traditional scouting process (the Bengals do not have a traditional scouting department), it seems they do as well, if not better, than any other team in the league identifying players who fit their system and making them stick.

They also have drafted as many wide receivers as any franchise in the league since 2007, which may or may not be worth much. Either way the Bengals are looking to keep up their drafting acumen in this year’s selection meeting.

It would seem they need to look for a linebacker to roam the middle, or more help along the defensive line, but they really can go best player available. Though many are not sold on Andy Dalton, even if the team was not sold on him, they are quite unlikely to find a better solution in this draft.

The Bengals have a great chance to continue to build depth, and players who can stick in Cincinnati for years to come.

Here are the nine picks the Bengals hold in this weekend’s draft, which begins Thursday evening.
