Netherlands goalkeeper Loes Geurts suffered a scary head injury when she clashed in the air with New Zealand forward Hannah Wilkinson and some how managed to stay in the game.
The 2015 Women’s World Cup is underway, the first ever to be played entirely on turf. While we’ve expected some injuries because of the play on turf, the first scary injury of this tournament was actually a head injury in the second game on opening day.
Netherlands goalkeeper Loes Geurts was trying to make a play on the ball the same time New Zealand forward Hannah Wilkinson was trying to get a head on the ball to score.
The result was either Wilkinson’s head or shoulder going into the head of Geurts. She was clearly injured, laying on the ground motionless for a couple of moments.
And another angle:
The training staff came out to treat her and the back up began to warm up, but ultimately play resumed and the that is when the real shocking thing happened.
Geurts stayed in the game. She suffered a seemingly serious head injury and managed to stay in the game when she could clearly have suffered a concussion or other serious head injury.
Hopefully that isn’t the case and she is fine, but you can’t feel comfortable with how this was handled.
