There are only four matinee games today, which leaves us with few options when looking at past performance against opponents. Who are the best options? I will help you figure that out!

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science.

Here is my early FanDuel lineup for July 8:

Pitcher:

Best Bet:

Jacob deGrom, Mets ($10,800): deGrom has only faced the Giants once, and surprise!, he was dominant. He went 7.1 innings against them last August, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out seven in a no decision. That was also against Jake Peavy, whom he is facing today. Small world, huh? At any rate, the player that touched him for the two run homer in the eighth inning was pinch hitter Travis Ishikawa, who is no longer with the team. The current Giants roster had just two hits in 17 at bats.

Honorable Mention:

Mike Fiers, Brewers ($7,700): Fiers has let the Braves hit .259 off of him in 27 at bats, and four of the seven hits have gone for doubles, but he has only allowed two RBI. He has done a great job of limiting damage against Atlanta, which makes him worth consideration here. The knock on him is that he is facing Julio Teheran. Teheran has done pretty well against Milwaukee, allowing 22 hits and four walks in 89 at bats. Teheran is slightly more ($500) than Fiers, but he is a little more proven. Both pitchers provide a decent plan B if you don’t want to spend on deGrom.

Catcher:

Best Bet:

Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers ($3,200): Lucroy got a day off on Monday, so I fully expect him to be in here this afternoon. And with his 4 for 6 with a walk and two doubles off of Teheran in his career, he provides a great option at a shallow position this afternoon.

Honorable Mention:

Chris Herrman, Twins ($2,200): Kurt Suzuki is just 1 for 5 off of Ubaldo Jimenez in his career, so this would be a good time for the Twins to rest him. Herrman is 3 for 6 with two doubles and a RBI off of Ubaldo in his career. If the Twins start him today, he should be strongly considered in your lineups as well.

First Base:

Best Bet:

Chris Davis, Orioles ($3,400): Davis is only 2 for 8 with a walk off of Tom Milone, but both of those hits are home runs. That makes him the best bet today with Joe Mauer being a woeful 1 for 11 off of Ubaldo Jimenez and Miguel Cabrera on the DL.

Honorable Mention:

Lucas Duda, Mets ($2,400): Duda is only 1 for 5 off of Jake Peavy, but his hit is also a home run. Chasing home runs at a very shallow position due to injuries this afternoon is probably not a bad idea.

Second Base:

Best Bet:

Brian Dozier, Twins ($3,800): Dozier has hit Ubaldo well. He is 5 for 12 with a walk and a double off of him, but he has not homered or driven in a run. Still, in a small player pool like we have this afternoon, it’s hard to pass on sure points. Dozier will get you something at least.

Honorable Mention:

Wilmer Flores, Mets ($2,500): Flores moving to second base for FanDuel purposes is great for us who play the game. Second is more shallow than shortstop. Flores is 1 for 3 off of Peavy, but his one hit is a two run double. Expect something good to come of him today at a reasonable price.

Shortstop:

Best Bet:

Jean Segura, Brewers ($2,800): Segura is 4 for 9 with a walk and a solo home run off of Julio Teheran in his career. He is the only current Brewer that has taken Teheran deep, so that has to count for something!

Honorable Mention:

J.J. Hardy, Orioles ($2,400): Hardy is also 4 for 9 off of Milone, but his only extra base hit is a double, not a homer. That gives him second billing, but Hardy has been heating up lately. If you need the $400 elsewhere, Hardy is a very good plan B.

Third Base:

Best Bet:

Manny Machado, Orioles ($4,200): Machado is 5 for 8 with a solo home run off of Tommy Milone in his career. Machado has had a very good year with very little fanfare. Unfortunately for us, the people on FanDuel know what he has done, hence the higher price. But he could very well be worth it today. The history is there.

Honorable Mention:

Aramis Ramirez, Brewers ($3,400): Ramirez is leaving his slow start behind and starting to come around. He is also only 2 for 8 off of Teheran, but he does have a double and three RBI off of him. The entire Brewer roster combined has two RBI off of Teheran.

Outfield:

Best Bets:

Seth Smith, Mariners ($2,600): Smith is not the first name that comes to mind in the Seattle lineup, but today he should be. He has 6 hits and two walks in 17 at bats against Anibal Sanchez. Included in those six hits are a double, two homers, and three RBI. He is a strong bet at a great price this afternoon.

Steve Pearce, Orioles ($2,500): Pearce is 4 for 6 with a double and a RBI off of Tommy Milone. He will likely start against the lefty this afternoon, making him a tantalizing option at this price.

Michael Cuddyer, Mets ($2,200): Cuddyer has been held out of the lineup here and there lately to help keep him fresh, but his career numbers against Peavy and his sitting yesterday make me confident that he will be in there this afternoon. Cuddyer is 4 for 13 with a walk, two doubles, and three RBI off of Peavy, making him a great low priced option.

Honorable Mention:

Torii Hunter, Twins ($3,000): Hunter is 8 for 21 with a walk, two doubles, and a RBI off of Ubaldo. Considering how well the Twins did yesterday, the lineup seems to be clicking right now. Hunter could be a big part of that today.

Nelson Cruz, Mariners ($3,200): Cruz is only 1 for 5 with a walk off of Anibal Sanchez, but that one hit was a three run homer. If you have the money to chase homers in the outfield, Cruz should be plan A.
