Minnesota Twins pitcher Phil Hughes was coming off one of the best seasons of his career last season.  He had as many walks as he had wins last year(16). This season has been a bit of a different story. Hughes has struggled in a big way this year, giving up the most hits in baseball with 172 and homers with 28.

Now Hughes finds himself on the disabled list with inflammation in his lower back. He was tagged for nine hits and seven runs in three innings in his last start.

For the Twins, they are going to have to shuffle around their rotation a bit. They finally get Tommy Milone back from injury and he’ll pitch on Sunday. Milone is 5-3 with a 3.76 ERA, but a 4.82 FIP. He’s given up 81 hits in 81 innings.

Trevor May is going to find himself back into the Twins rotation as well. May is 4-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 15 starts, but is 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA in 13 relief appearances. His WHIP as a starter is 1.37 while as a reliever it is 1.26.

Tyler Duffey will also find himself getting a start this weekend. Duffey is the Twins 15th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com. The fifth round pick in 2012 is 7-8 at AA and AAA with a 2.54 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .228 against him.  Duffey debuted against the Blue Jays last week and gave up six runs in two innings.

For the Twins, it gives them a chance to take a look at May and Duffey who are a part of their future in their rotation while they sit just 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
