North Carolina defeated Gonzaga in a sloppy, foul-riddled NCAA national championship Monday night. It was not enjoyable to watch.

The NCAA College Basketball National Championship was contested between Gonzaga and North Carolina on Monday night. The Tar Heels won their sixth national championship by a score of 71-65. On every level, in every way, it was an atrocious basketball game.

Let’s get right to the stats, folks.

All of the following statistics are taken from the official box score on the official NCAA website. Let’s start with the victors of the worst college basketball national championship game I have ever seen.

North Carolina took 73 shots over the course of the game. They made 26 of those shots. That’s a field goal shooting percentage of 36. UNC attempted 27 3-point field goals. They made four — four — of them for a percentage of 15. The Tar Heels also shot 58 percent from the free throw line and committed 22 personal fouls. They won the national championship.

The individual stats that stick out for the Tar Heels include Joel Berry shooting 4-13 from beyond the arc and All-American Josh Jackson going 0-9 from deep. Elite Eight hero Luke Maye, who hit the game winner against Kentucky, shot 0-1 from the field in 10 minutes of action on Monday night.

The losers of the worst national championship of all time, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, shot even worse overall, finishing 20-59 from the field. That’s a shooting percentage of 34. Thirty. Four. They started the second half 3-19. The Zags shot considerably better from 3, knocking down eight of their 19 attempts. They shot 65 percent from the line and equaled UNC’s foul total of 22.

Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski, who has the most career wins of any player in the history of the NCAA, had the worst night of all. The fifth-year senior shot 1-8 from the field, finishing with nine points thanks to seven free throws. If he plays even half as well as he normally does the Bulldogs are probably national champions. Instead, the Polish import laid a giant egg that his teammates could not overcome.

To make things exponentially worse, the officials did everything they could to disrupt the flow of the game with incessant and inane foul calls. Before the under-12 minute media timeout in the second half the refs called 16 fouls. Both teams were in the bonus. They called all manner of touch fouls and off-the-ball fouls and generally killed any attempt by either side to go on a run. It was unforgivable. It was heinous. It was an absolute nightmare.

To illustrate this officiating ineptitude I present to you exhibit A:

North Carolina forward Kennedy Meeks’ hand is clearly out of bounds. That ref, not three yards away, called a jump ball. Yeah.

So, congrats to North Carolina fans, I guess. Your team won the worst college basketball championship game of all time. May we all be able to forget this disaster immediately.
