Chris Owings heads to the DL with a fractured middle finger. How does his injury impact in fantasy baseball and possible replacements?

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Chris Owings broke his middle finger while attempting to bunt when Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn threw in on the hands and struck his middle finger. There is no timetable for his return as he will visit his hand specialist Dr. Sheridan, reported by Diamondbacks beat writer Steve Gilbert.

The Diamondbacks lose their starting shortstop, as they are now tied with the Colorado Rockies for 1st place in the NL Wild Card. They have internal options with Ketel Marte and Daniel Descalso to replace Owings. With only the trade deadline a day away, the Diamondbacks only have limited time to look for external options.

Those options available on the trade market are A’s SS Jed Lowrie, Mets 2B Neil Walker and SS/3B Asdrubal Cabrera, and Reds SS Zack Cozart. A trade is unlikely but we’ve seen some crazier things happen. They should be platoon options if they decide to not acquire a shortstop.

For the season, Owings was slashing .269/.300/.443 with 12 HR, 51 RBI, 12 SB and .175 ISO. His 12 HR and 51 RBI this season were both career highs.

Although he had success early in the season, he has struggled recently. In July, Owings slashing a dismal .171/.190/.256 with 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 SB and .085 ISO.

As a result, here are some possible replacements for Owings. Jordy Mercer, Freddy Galvis, Johan Camargo and Cabrera are a few names to consider.

With a fractured middle finger, he should be on the DL for some time. If you’re out of DL spots it would be smart for you to drop Owings.

Dynasty league players should take quick action on Camargo, while he’s on the rise for the Braves since replacing Dansby Swanson, who was sent down to AAA.

Next: Royals trade for Melky Cabrera

Owings is likely to miss 1-2 months with Nick Ahmed on the DL for that time with a similar injury. The Diamondbacks hope to have him back by the playoffs should they make it.
