Arizona football head coach Kevin Sumlin has tested positive for COVID-19.

The hiring of former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has done little to change Arizona’s status as a doormat in the Pac-12 South, largely due to the fact Sumlin is still picking up the pieces Rich Rodriguez left behind. Just when it looked like Sumlin had the Wildcats ready to go ahead of a six-game season, the coronavirus has snuck up and incapacitated Sumlin.

Sumlin has tested positive for COVID-19, per Adam Rittenberg. Luckily, Sumlin claims that he is feeling well and will still try to lead the Wildcats virtually as they sharpen their axes and prepare for a truncated Pac-12 season.

Sumlin joins Florida State head coach Mike Norvell  among those testing positive this season for the coronavirus.

Sumlin made his name as the head coach with Houston, where his up-tempo Air Raid helped Case Keenum rewrite the record books. Sumlin returned to Texas A&M, where he made his name as an assistant, shortly thereafter. While he started off his tenure with an 11-2 season and a Cotton Bowl victory, Sumlin’s Aggies soon started to slip into mediocrity, losing five games in each of his final four seasons.

Sumlin went just 9-15 during his first two years at Arizona, as Khalil Tate’s elusive running didn’t mesh with Sumlin’s aerial attack. However, with 6-foot-6, 230-pound Grant Gunnell now established as QB1 in Tuscon, the Wildcats might lead the Pac-12 in several key passing categories. If the defense holds up, look for Sumlin’s group to pull off an upset or two.

While he hasn’t exactly channeled Dick Tomey during his tike in Tuscon, Gunnell at quarterback provides some home that Sumlin can finally see his dream of an explosive, downfield passing offense realized this season. Hopefully, Sumlin recovers in time to lead the Wildcats in their season opener against Utah.
