3 Yankees trades that could blow up the trade deadline
By Scott Rogust
This could very well be the most typical Yankees trade imaginable. If the Yankees want to make the postseason and make a deep run to the World Series, the best way in doing so is to build a stacked starting rotation. The Yankees have had some bad luck, as Corey Kluber is out for a while due to a shoulder injury, Luis Severino suffered a setback during a rehab start and Jameson Taillon has not panned out so far in his stint with the team.
Given that, there just so happens to be one huge starting pitcher who could get dangled at the trade deadline, and that is Washington Nationals starter Max Scherzer.
While the Nationals have bounced back as of late (thanks to the power of Kyle Schwarber), the team has an important question to ask. Scherzer is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, and he could be a huge trade chip at the deadline to help replenish their farm system.
Through 14 starts this season, Scherzer has posted a 2.19 ERA, a 0.826 WHIP, 112 strikeouts and 18 batters walked through 82.1 innings of work.
The Yankees need to add some top of the rotation help by July 30 if they want to sniff the playoffs. Gerrit Cole cannot do it all on his own. That is why the Yankees need to do what they always do, and that is bring in the biggest fish on the trading block in Scherzer.
