How many college football teams have had a Heisman Trophy winner in back-to-back seasons? A very, very small group of teams.

If Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young is able to take the Heisman Trophy back to Tuscaloosa, then Alabama will join a very small group of college football programs.

Last season, Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith earned the trophy. If Young brings it home this year, then the Crimson Tide will be among the group of programs who have won it in back-to-back seasons.

And how many college football programs have been able to enshrine Heisman Trophy winners in back-to-back seasons?

Very, very few.

How many teams have won back-to-back Heisman Trophies?

A total of five college football programs have been able to have a Heisman Trophy winner in back-to-back seasons. Just five. If Young takes the trophy home this year, that number grows to six.

Who are those college football programs and their players?

In 1936 and 1937, Larry Kelly and Clint Frank claimed the award respectively as members of the Yale Bulldogs. In 1945 and 1946, Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis were presented with the trophy as Army Black Knights.

Archie Griffin won the Heisman in 1974 and 1975 as an Ohio State Buckeye. To date, Griffin is the only player to have won the Heisman in back-to-back seasons. He’s also the only player to win it twice.

There’s a bit of dispute and debate over the USC Trojans and their players who won the Heisman in consecutive seasons. Matt Leinart won the award in 2004 and Reggie Bush earned it in 2005, but the NCAA does not acknowledge Bush’s Heisman. Ultimately it was vacated and remains a point of controversy because of the NCAA. Still, it’s worth noting that he did in fact win the Heisman Trophy.

In 2017 and 2018, the Oklahoma Sooners had Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray win the Heisman. And should Young win it this year, then he and Smith will end up joining this group.
