Jay Wright was overcome with emotions talking about his Villanova Wildcats getting back to the Final Four.

Jay Wright, Jermaine Samuels and the rest of the Villanova Wildcats are going to the Final Four.

No. 2 Villanova won an ugly rock fight of an Elite Eight game over the No. 5 Houston Cougars, 50-44. The Wildcats essentially played a six-man rotation to best Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars by six points in San Antonio on Saturday night. Samuels led all scorers with 16 points and 10 rebounds in his double-double. This was a game where the grittier team found a way to eke out the victory.

When asked about what it meant to be going back to the Final Four, Wright got a little emotional and essentially handed the mic over to Samuels for him to finish the drill.

Villanova basketball head coach Jay Wright gets emotional about Final Four

This is the seventh time in school history the Wildcats are going to the Final Four. It is the fourth time they have made it this far under Wright’s guidance. Though they dropped their 2009 national semifinal game, the Wildcats have won the whole thing the last two times they have gotten this far, 2016 and 2018. It may be four years ago, but so much has changed in the world since then.

Should the Wildcats win their next two games, Wright will have won three national championships over the course of less than a decade. He would no longer be the most underrated head coach in college basketball. In fact, one could make a strong argument that he is the best head coach in men’s basketball, especially with the iconic Mike Krzyzewski calling it a career after this tourney.

Under Wright’s watch, Villanova has become every bit the college basketball juggernaut of late.
