Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl history: Results, appearances, win-loss record
The Kansas City Chiefs will be playing on Super Sunday for the third time in four years. How has the franchise fared in the “Big Game?”
On Sunday at Glendale, AZ, the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs hope to hoist a Lombardi Trophy for the second time in four years. They face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII for a battle of the top playoff seeds in their respective conferences.
The Chiefs will become the 12th NFL franchise to play in at least five Super Bowls (the Patriots lead the way with 11). With a victory over the Eagles, the club will become the 10th team in the league to win at least three Super Bowls (the Steelers and Patriots own a record six Super Bowl titles).
As for this franchise’s first four Super Sunday appearances…
Chiefs Super Bowl history: Results, appearances, record
Packers 35, Chiefs 10 (Super Bowl I)
It was the inaugural “AFL-NFL World Championship Game, it took place at the Los Angeles Coliseum and the contest was not a sellout.
Future Hall of Fame head coaches Vince Lombardi and Hank Stram saw the Packers and Chiefs play a competitive first half with Green Bay owning a slim 14-10 lead. The Chiefs would not score in the second half. Quarterback Bart Starr was the game’s MVP but Packers’ wide receiver Max McGee came up big.
Chiefs 23, Vikings 7 (Super Bowl IV)
Chiefs’ head coach Hank Stram was miked and it made NFL Films history. Kansas City’s defense featured six future Hall of Famers (Buck Buchanan, Curley Culp, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Emmitt Thomas and Johnny Robinson), and Vikings’ quarterback Joe Kapp was pummeled all day.
Mike Garrett ran for a touchdown on a play called “65 Toss Power Trap,” Otis Taylor scored on a pass from Len Dawson (game MVP) at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.
Chiefs 31, 49ers 20 (Super Bowl LIV)
The contest was in South Florida and the franchise was back in the “Big Game” for the first time since 1969. In his seventh season as the team’s head coach, Andy Reid was making his second Super Bowl appearance (Eagles in 2004) and quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the offense.
As was the case the entire 2019 postseason, the Chiefs had to rally from a double-digit deficit and wound up with an 11-point victory and Mahomes earned MVP honors.
Buccaneers 31, Chiefs 9 (Super Bowl LV)
The Chiefs were looking to become the first team since the Patriots of 2003 and ’04 to repeat as Super Bowl champions. They were facing the wild-card Buccaneers and veteran quarterback Tom Brady and the game was in the Bucs’ home stadium.
The bigger issue was Kansas City’s offensive line, which was missing starting tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. Patrick Mahomes took a licking and Andy Reid’s team was held to three field goals.
