The Ravens aren’t the first team to offer this to fans. Last season, the New England Patriots became the first team to offer such a deal after tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder. More than 1,200 fans exchanged jersey’s in person for jerseys of current Patriots players. The team did not require fans to show a receipt of purchase.
Ray Rice’s jersey is no longer available online at the NFL Shop nor on the Baltimore Ravens website.
Rice has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell did not rule out reinstating Rice at some point. Michael Vick, who was reinstated by the league after being suspended after he served 21 months in prison for dog fighting charges, came to Rice’s side and said he should be given another chance. Unlike Vick, Rice was not sent to jail.
The jersey exchange will take place Fri., Sept 19 and Sat., Sept 20 at M&T Bank Stadium. Jerseys must be officially licensed and will be limited to one jersey per person.
