American Pharoah wins first Triple Crown in 37 years

For the first time in 37 years, we have a Triple Crown winner as American Pharoah has ended the drought and given the world of horse racing a new star.

This time last year, the world was leaning on California Chrome to win the first Triple Crown in 36 years, but when he failed to deliver the world wouldn’t have to wait very long for it to happen. A year later, American Pharoah has delivered where so many other horses have failed and won the first Triple Crown since 1978.

It wasn’t just a win by American Pharoah, it was an utter blowout that featured sheer domination by a single horse in the race. Things were close at the starting gate, but that’s about as far as things got before it was clear that American Pharoah was going to win things and end our Triple Crown draught.

The win was extra special for jockey Victor Espinoza, who had a chance to win the Triple Crown last year atop California Chrome but failed to deliver at Belmont. But this year was different, and the moment wasn’t lost on Espinoza, who reacted as purely and honestly as any of the rest of us would in that moment.

But the day isn’t just about Espinoza, as the winning of the Triple Crown is so rare that everyone who is involved in getting American Pharoah to this point is something that the world is sharing in celebrating. Horse racing isn’t the most popular sport int he world, but people love history and they love watching it get made.

We saw that on Saturday in Belmont, as history was made by American Pharoah and the sports world saw a new star born.

Of course, unlike other sports where stars are born so young, American Pharoah is going out on top. The horse will retire and enjoy a life that few other horses get to enjoy — and it’s was well deserved and very much earned. American Pharoah isn’t just a horse who won a Triple Crown, he’s a sports legend now and nothing will be able to dislodge his place in history.
