Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Odds & Prediction
By Mike Marteny
Odds and prediction for the 2015 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl!
Last weekend saw the opening of Bowl season, and we were treated to some very interesting games, including something called the “Holy War” in Sin City on a Saturday night. How can you go wrong with that? Bowl season means that I am back with more picks against the spread!

In case you missed how the point scale works, here is a brief rundown:
5. A lock. I am comfortable making a sizable wager on this game.
4. Very confident. Not quite a lock, but I am comfortable making a decent sized wager on it.
3. Middle of the road. Good enough that I would make a small wager on it.
2. Could go either way. So much so that I wouldn’t bet on it.
1. Stay away from these.
Take note that any games that involve 1-AA teams will NOT be picked. That means I will be staying away from the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. I haven’t paid much attention to FCS schools this year. It wont do anyone any good for me to make only a slightly educated guess on the game.
Just in case you missed any:
- Gildan New Mexico Bowl
- Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl
- Raycom Media Camellia Bowl
- Autonation Cure Bowl
- R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
- Miami Beach Bowl
Now, on to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl!
Akron vs. Utah State(-7.5) at Boise, ID(5):
Akron(7-5, 5-3):
Wins: vs. Savannah State(52-9), at Louisiana-Lafayette(35-14), at Eastern Michigan(47-21), at Massachusetts(17-13), at Miami(OH)(37-28), vs. Buffalo(42-21), vs. Kent State(20-0)
Losses: at Oklahoma(3-41), vs. Pittsburgh(7-24), vs. Ohio(12-14), at Bowling Green(10-59), vs. Central Michigan(6-14)
Record vs. bowl teams: 0-5
Utah State(6-6, 5-3):
Wins: vs. Southern Utah(12-9), vs. Colorado State(33-18), at Fresno State(56-14), vs. Boise State(52-26), vs. Wyoming(58-27), vs. Nevada(31-27)
Losses: at Utah(14-24), at Washington(17-31), at San Diego State(14-48), at New Mexico(13-14), at Air Force(28-35), vs. BYU(28-51)
Record vs. bowl teams: 3-6
Akron mowed down the MAC East, winning their last four games. This propelled them into a bowl game after a disappointing 3-5 start. That said, the Zips did not beat a bowl team, and the only one they were really competitive against was Ohio.
Utah State lost arguably their best player in school history in quarterback Chuckie Keeton again in September. The three knee injuries have taken their toll on Keeton, who is a shadow of the player he used to be. Sophomore Kent Myers took over in his stead and threw 14 touchdowns to only three interceptions. Both will likely be available for the bowl game, but it seems as though Myers will start if able. It would be nice for the Aggies to get some snaps for Keeton, but if you watched the season finale against BYU, you know that Keeton has little of the dynamic ability that he flashed during his first season in Logan. Myers clearly gives them the better chance to win.
I am honestly the spread is this small. Akron has a solid defense, but they haven’t played a team with the firepower of Utah State with the exception of Oklahoma and Bowling Green. They were decimated by both teams. This likely wont be close. I will be very surprised if it stays in single digits.
My pick: Utah State
