Week 2 Waiver Wire Targets: Fantasy Football

It is finally here, football season. We waited so long for it to get here and now it is going to be a sprint every week until the end of the season. Before you know it, the season will be over and you will look back at the season hopefully with fond memories and celebrating a championship.  One of the most important parts of putting together a championship season is to work the waiver wire, and to work it successfully. Part of working it successfully is knowing when you need to make a move and when not to, sometimes adding someone could be a bad move depending on who you drop. It is hard to say after one week who is worthy of an add or who is worthy of cutting bait. Starting next week I will be publishing a list of players that are not only worthy of waiver claims but also a list of players that are worth cutting . This week, the list of players I am publishing are either streamers for positions that are usually streamed (quarterback, tight end and defense) or replacement players for owners of David Johnson or Allen Robinson.

The Streamers:

Quarterback:

Carson Palmer (ARI) at IND: I know, I know Carson Palmer was a massive disappointment in Week 1. Two things were working against Palmer last week that made him struggle, injuries across the offense and Detroit’s defense is better than we anticipated. There weren’t any major injuries (until David Johnson) that lead to an inactive player, but injuries that kept players from playing in the preseason, practicing leading up to week one and developing chemistry as a unit. Now with David Johnson gone for a few months the Arizona offense needs to pic up the pieces, and that is going to be through the air. Up next for Palmer is a defense that Jarred Goff burned last week in the Indianapolis Colts.

Tight End:

Charles Clay: Over Clay’s last five games he has scored five touchdowns and has developed a solid floor. He is in an offense that seems to be getting worse by the day, but has quickly developed into Tyrod Taylor‘s favorite target. Another thing working in Clay’s favor is he is one of the longer tenured targets in the offense, leading to Taylor to look his way more when he needs a play. Clay has developed into a TE2 on a weekly basis and has upside for TE1 if he continues to score.

Defense:

Ravens vs Cleveland: Rookie quarterback on the road against a defense that hasn’t allowed a point so far this season (even in preseason).

Tampa Bay vs Chicago: Tampa’s first game of the season after a natural disaster could give them extra motivation. Also Mike Glennon is turnover prone and the Bucs have some young playmakers.

Week 2 Waiver Wire Targets: Fantasy Football

Running Back

Javorius ‘Buck’ Allen:  Allen out carried Terrance West in a game that they controlled from start to finish. This may be a reason why Allen got more carries, but it could also mean that they don’t trust West to shoulder the load. Allen figures to at least take over injured Danny Woodhead‘s pass catching role any could start eating into West’s early down role. Allen received rave reviews during camp and West has done little to separate himself.

Kerwynn Williams: No one player is going to be able to replace the production lost by David Johnson. The Cardinals already went out and signed former Cardinal Chris Johnson which means they won’t put their full trust in one player. Williams seems to have the highest upside in the carson pashort-term however with him seemingly taking over the early down work until Johnson gets back up to speed. This has the makings of a full-blown RBBC.

Tarik Cohen– Cohen had a huge day and is making it very hard for Chicago to not get him more involved. The news that kinda went under the radar is the injury to Benny Cunningham who was the pass catching back, leaving Cohen to pick up the slack. He keeps performing at a high level and appears to be the top waiver pick up for running back because he has the most defined role.

Worth looking at: Chris Carson, Andre Ellington, Marlon Mack

Wide Receivers

Cooper Kupp: Kupp scored in his first game and had the best overall game of all the Ram receivers. He fits the skill set the of Jarred Goff the best and is a catching machine. He will have a very safe floor in PPR leagues but he is also starting to make a case for standard as well. He has the makings of being the go to target for Goff and could become an extension of the horrible run game they have in an effort to open things up by getting a lot of short. quick passes. Outside of PPR leagues however you will need him to be score a touchdown to be anything more than a WR3.

Kenny Golladay: Golladay had a huge debut with two touchdowns. Golladay can carve himself a role in the offense but he is at best the fourth option. He is going to be touchdown or bust most weeks unless there is an injury in front of him making him more of a target in standard leagues than in PPR.

Paul Richardson: Richardson won out the number two receiver position in Seattle leading to them trading away Jermaine Kearse. No one in the Seattle offense had a standout performance so you may even be able to get him and not use claim. Russell Wilson has started slow the past few seasons leading to some poor production for his receivers, but when Wilson is on there are few better than him. He may have a few bust weeks but he will be an asset in fantasy playoffs when Wilson is at his best.

Worth looking at: Kendall Wright, Marqise Lee
