Common Opponents:

Texas Tech: Arkansas beat the Red Raiders  in Lubbock by 21. Texas beat them in Lubbock, also by 21. Advantage: PUSH

Prediction:

Arkansas played very well down the stretch with the exception of the Georgia game. This program is not quite what it was before it was run into the ground, but Bret Bielema has made tremendous progress in just two years. They are competitive in nearly every game now. You couldn’t say that two years ago. This team is built around a good ground game and a great defense. If you don’t believe me, go watch tape of their dominance of Mississippi. That was a top ten team!

Texas started the season 2-4 under Charlie Strong, but they rebounded to finish 6-6. That is obviously not up to Texas standards, but strong is hell-bent on running a clean program. Many things needed to be changed when he got there. If the Longhorn brass/boosters give Strong the three years that he needs without passing judgment, I think they will be happy with their decision. The emergence of QB Tyrone Swoopes was the key to Texas’s strong finish. His progression this year reminded me of Vince Young during his freshman season. With a full offseason to run the team, we could see a very different – and very dangerous – Texas team next year.

This year though, they have struggled against teams with good defenses. Just look what a healthy BYU squad did to them in Austin. Kansas State and TCU also handcuffed them in the second half of the season. Arkansas has the defense to do the exact same thing.

Pick: Arkansas
