Common Opponents:
Texas: K-State shut them out in Manhattan. UCLA won by three at Jerry World, which was practically a road game for the Bruins. Advantage: Kansas State
Prediction:
Kansas State’s strength is once again their defense. QB Jake Waters is not flashy nor does he do any one thing particularly well, but he is a smart player and doesn’t make mistakes. That is really all that Bill Snyder requires of his quarterbacks. He wants game managers who don’t make mistakes. That is not to say that the Wildcat offense is without explosiveness. Tyler Lockett might be the best receiver in a conference full of good ones. Waters looks to him regularly. Curry Sexton is an underrated guy on the other side that can burn defenses if they roll away from him onto Lockett. K-State is based 0n putting themselves in situations to win matchups, which they do very well.
For a team that was supposed to have a defense that bordered on dominant, the Bruins were a disappointment from that perspective. They gave up 30 or more points seven times in 12 games. They even gave up 20 to an anemic Virginia offense. The defense still has holes. The strength of UCLA is QB Brett Hundley, and almost exclusively him. They don’t run the ball particularly well, nor do they have a playmaker at WR that can change a game. It speaks volumes about Hundley’s ability that this team is still in the top 15.
The Wildcat defense did a very good job on Nick Marshall, but were gouged a bit by Bryce Petty and Trevone Boykin. Hundley is a better thrower than Marshall, but not as good as Petty. He compares favorably to Boykin, so it is possible that UCLA will get their points. The question is whether the Kansas State offense can keep up. I tend to think that they can. The Bruins aren’t great in the secondary, and Kansas State has two quality receivers who both will likely play on Sundays. I don’t really like this matchup for the Bruins. And that is the way that Kansas State likes it.
Pick: Kansas State
