The Montreal Canadiens are planning for life with new leadership.

The Montreal Canadiens will embark on life without a captain to start the 2014-15 season after letting Brian Gionta leave via free agency this past summer. Gionta is now the captain of the Buffalo Sabres and now the Montreal Canadiens will lead by committee more or less instead of sewing a C onto one sweater. The team didn’t make a big deal of the decision, but now with the season set to begin on Wednesday night, star defenseman P.K. Subban stressed that leadership will be formed on the ice, rather than in the locker room.

“I think we look for people to do rather than say,” Subban said per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. “I mean, I’m a firm believer that usually when you’re talking in those kinds of moments, most guys aren’t really even listening…I encourage my teammates to go out there and do, lead by example. Do your talking on the ice, that’s what we need…That’s the person I want to follow.”

The Montreal Canadiens have plenty willing and able to do this season. The team made the Conference Finals last season only to see starting goaltender Carey Price fall to injury. Now healthy once more, Price and the Habs are looking to repeat their bid in the East with more success. Price concurred with Subban’s take on leadership in the locker room.

“The old saying is, ‘Talk is cheap and it takes money to buy whiskey.’ It’s true.”

The Montreal Canadiens begin their captain-less quest on Wednesday night when they visit arch-rival Toronto in an early Atlantic Division showdown.
