Prediction:
Mississippi allowed the fewest points of any team in FBS this year (13.8 per game). It’s not like they played a bunch of nobodies in non-conference either. They beat Boise State, who is also in a New Year’s Six bowl. They beat a good Memphis team. They beat a Lafayette team that won their bowl game. Their only two non-bowl opponents were Vanderbilt and Presbyterian. That speaks volumes about the strength of the SEC West. The fact that Ole Miss was still able to have the best scoring defense in the country speaks volumes about the Land Sharks.
TCU can only wonder “what if”? What if they had not blown a 21 point lead with 11 minutes left in Waco? They would most certainly be a part of the playoffs then. One could (and I have) argue that the Horned Frogs deserve to be in the playoff anyway. The fact remains that they lost to a top five team on the road. Ohio State lost to a 6-6 team at home. The normally stout TCU defense got punished over the top by Baylor in the second half of that game.
This has all the makings of a defensive battle. Ole Miss is more tested than TCU, but the Horned Frogs have more playmakers on offense. The Rebels were not the same team after WR Laquon Treadwell broke his leg near the end of the Auburn game. I can see why TCU is favored, but I have my doubts as to whether they can cover this. The fact that they fell from securely in the playoffs at number 3 to undeniably out at number 6 after winning a game by 52 points is unfathomable. Remember what happened to Oregon a few years back when they thought they deserved a shot at the title, but missed out? They got pounded in the Rose Bowl. I’m not saying that TCU will get pounded, but I do question whether their disappointment will show on the field. Even if it doesn’t, this will be their toughest game of the year.
Pick: Mississippi
