The Oakland A’s have no remorse for the Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are public enemy No. 1 for their role in the illegal sign-stealing scandal back in the 2017 season. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred found the team guilty, but the players walked away with not even a slap on the wrist. Even though no fans are allowed at games this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Astros aren’t escaping the ridicule. That was evident this weekend.

During Friday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve stepped up to the plate. At the time, A’s broadcaster Ray Fosse can be heard making buzzing noises during his at-bat, which is a subtle nod to the allegations surrounding Altuve wearing a buzzer during Game 6 of the 2019 ALCS.

The Astros will never escape ridicule

As baseball fans remember, the Astros reached the World Series last season after Altuve hit a walk-off home run against New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman. The homer was secondary to Altuve’s reaction when rounding third base. Instead of celebrating, Altuve can be seen pleading with his teammates not to tear off his jersey. After touching home, the second baseman went to the dugout and emerged wearing a t-shirt.

Those actions led to many believing that Altuve was wearing a buzzer inside of his uniform to relay to him what pitch was coming. Things were more shady after seeing Altuve square up on the last Chapman pitch, with many suggesting that he knew what was coming. But, those accusations were not proven to be true by the league.

Regardless, Altuve has to live with many doubting his abilities, considering his first-ever World Series title is tainted due to the organization-wide use of cameras to illegally steal signs. It appears that all of the ridicule has gotten to the veteran infielder, as he is batting a measly .190 and owns a .656 OPS, while recording three home runs and seven RBI.

Altuve better embrace the criticism like he received from Fosse, because this is going to be “buzzing” for the remainder of his MLB career.
